Mosquitoes have existed for more than 150 million years and comprise over 3,000 species. In Brazil, the main domestic species are: Culex quinquefasciatus, Culex pipiens, Aedes aegypti and Anopheles darlingi.
In general, males feed on sap and nectar, while females require blood to mature their eggs. Mosquitoes undergo complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa and adult.

Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex pipiens
Known as common mosquitoes, they are nocturnal. Females lay between 100 and 400 eggs in stagnant and polluted water. They are vectors of Filariasis (Elephantiasis).
Aedes aegypti
Has daytime habits. It is the transmitter of Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya and Yellow Fever. Eggs are deposited in clean stagnant water, such as vases, tires and water tanks.
Anopheles darlingi
Main malaria vector in Brazil. Prefers warm and humid environments. Females bite at night and cause allergic reactions.
