Cockroaches: characteristics, risks and how to eliminate them with JIMO

Cockroaches have been present in the world for over 400 million years, with more than 4,000 recorded species. Less than 1% of them are considered urban pests, but they are enough to cause discomfort and pose health risks.

They are omnivorous insects (they eat a wide variety of foods). They are easily attracted to sweets, fatty foods, and foods of animal origin. They can live up to one month without eating, one week without water, and even weeks without their head.

With nocturnal habits, they hide in cracks, crevices, and warm, humid places. They are commonly found in kitchens, drains, sewers, and behind furniture.

They are also vectors of diseases such as dysentery, gastroenteritis, poliomyelitis, and salmonella, as they spread microorganisms across the surfaces they walk on.

Types of urban cockroaches

Small cockroaches

The Blatella germanica, or German cockroach, measures up to 1.5 cm and has a high reproductive capacity. Each female lays 3 to 6 oothecae (egg capsules), with 30 to 50 eggs each.

It prefers places with food and moisture, such as kitchens, restaurants, hospitals, and storage areas.

Large cockroaches

The Periplaneta americana, or sewer cockroach, can reach up to 5 cm. It lives for 6 to 9 months, lays oothecae with 8 to 14 eggs, and prefers sewers, pipes, attics, and grease traps.

It is brown with a yellow shield on the head, and can fly in warm environments.
