Mites belong to the subclass Acari, of the class Arachnida. The term “acari” comes from the Greek akares, meaning “small” — and this is no coincidence: most measure between 0.25 and 0.7 mm, making them invisible to the naked eye.
They live for about two months and reproduce once or twice during this period, laying 20 to 50 eggs. Mating is most common between spring and autumn.
Where do mites live?
In household environments, mites feed on skin particles from humans and animals. A person sheds around 1 g of skin per day, which is enough to feed thousands of these microorganisms.
They are mainly found in:
- Mattresses;
- Blankets;
- Feather pillows;
- Carpets;
- Sofas;
- Stuffed toys
They thrive in places with humidity above 70% and temperatures above 20 °C. In regions over 1200 meters in altitude, they do not survive easily — which explains why allergies often ease in mountainous areas.
Health risks
Mite droppings and dead bodies mix with fine dust and are easily inhaled. In Brazil, they are the main cause of respiratory allergies, such as:
- Allergic rhinitis;
- Asthma
