Termites are eusocial insects organized into colonies with well-defined castes, where each group performs a specific function.
Found in almost every part of the world, they are most common in tropical and subtropical regions.
Their main food source is cellulose, which is digested with the help of symbiotic intestinal microorganisms.
Although they play an important ecological role as decomposers, some species cause serious damage to wood structures, furniture, and buildings.
Social structure of termites
- Queen and king: responsible for reproduction. The queen can live from 25 to 50 years;
- Eggs: thousands per year, incubated for two weeks under the care of the workers;
- Nymphs: take on functions after growth stages;
- Workers: sterile and blind, they drill the wood and feed the colony;
- Soldiers: protect the colony with their mandibles;
- Reproductives: develop wings and leave the colony during the swarm to form new colonies;
- Secondary reproductives: replace the royal pair in emergency situations.
Types of termites
Drywood Termite
Attacks wood with low moisture content, such as furniture, door frames, and window frames. The attack is silent and only noticed when the structure is already compromised. It produces dry and hard fecal pellets about 1 mm long.
Subterranean Termite
Highly destructive, it lives in the soil and searches for cellulose sources in buildings, entering through foundations, pipes, and walls. They build mud tunnels, visible on surfaces.
Arboreal Termite
Attacks dry or moist wood, preferring the sapwood over the heartwood. Common in poles, fences, and trees near homes.
Field Termite
Lives in visible mounds in the soil, common in pasture areas. Also known as mound termites.
Wood Borers
They are solitary beetles that also attack wood but to a lesser extent. They act from the larval to adult phase, leaving small holes after emerging from the infested piece.
