Scorpions are predatory arachnids, belonging to the same class as spiders, ticks, and mites. They have great ecological importance, as they help control the population of insects and small animals.
Their bodies can measure between 1 and 20 cm, with four pairs of legs, no wings, and no antennae. They are easily identified by their curved tail with a stinger and by their pincer-shaped pedipalps.
The venom is used to capture prey and also as a defense mechanism.
Where do scorpions live?
Scorpions are resistant to extreme temperatures, between 0 and 55 °C, and are present on almost all continents, except for very cold regions.
In urban areas, they usually hide in places with debris, construction materials, vacant lots, and gardens.
Inside houses, they can lodge in dark and tight spaces, such as basements, closets, and storage areas.
Health risks
All scorpions are venomous, but only about 25 species pose a serious risk to human health. Their venom also helps pre-digest the organs of their prey.
In case of an accident, treatment must be performed in a hospital environment, preferably with the scorpion in hand to facilitate diagnosis.
