Flies are insects with worldwide distribution, absent only in polar regions. They belong to the order Diptera, the same as mosquitoes. They are characterized by having prominent front wings and reduced hind wings, which function as balancing organs.
They undergo complete metamorphosis, passing through the egg, larva, pupa and adult stages. Many species are vectors of pathogenic microorganisms and can cause diseases in people and animals.
Houseflies
The housefly is the most common species in urban areas. It is more active during warm hours and seeks well-lit places. Since its mouthparts only allow the ingestion of liquids, it regurgitates saliva containing enzymes to liquefy solid foods.
They are attracted to garbage, meat, fish, milk and sweet foods. Eggs are deposited in decomposing organic matter and hatch within 24 hours. The full cycle may take 10 to 14 days, depending on the environment.
