Wood is a renewable natural resource of high commercial value, used in sectors such as construction, furniture, packaging and utility poles. Its cycle involves critical stages, and each phase requires care to prevent losses caused by fungi or insects.
From tree to wood
Trees are made up of cells oriented in two directions: longitudinal and radial. Conifer species (softwoods) emerged around 150 million years ago, and broadleaf species (hardwoods) around 50 million years ago.
Right after felling, wood becomes vulnerable. Two main types of biological attacks compromise its quality:
- Microorganisms, such as staining and decay fungi
- Xylophagous insects, mainly termites

Wood treatment
It is known that wood—especially light‑colored conifers—must undergo prophylactic pre‑treatment with chemical preservatives, especially during natural drying, to prevent fungal stains such as blue stain.
However, due to the environmental and human toxicity of these products, many have been banned in several countries. For this reason, it is important to choose effective and safe solutions, such as those from JIMO.
In the case of xylophagous insects, termites are the main cause of severe—often irreversible—damage. Prevention is the best approach.
